Vocabulous is a website whose aim is to improve and enrich your Latin, because why not. While its main purpose is to get both your vocab and grammar on fleek, as the kids say, there is so much more to it than just that. I have carefully crafted some Latin Jokes and Memes for you to view at your pleasure ("pleasure" might be sugarcoating it. Let's just say you'll get a reaction, maybe good, maybe bad, from looking at the JAM page.) There are some Latin stories you can read too, all written by me, and two of which are annotated to help you read them. I'm planning on adding some more features (like Translation and Sign Up) to enhance your experience here at Vocabulous, so keep an eye out!
I feel like I should give some more info about my pièce de résistance, my crème de la crème - the Vocabulous program! You can test your vocab in all its different forms to the point where you're chanting inflections left right and centre! So how does it work, you may ask? I've set up some tables that link all the possible grammatical forms of a part of speech (e.g. first declension feminine) to their relevant inflectional morphemes (e.g. a,ae,ae,am,a,a // ae,arum,is,as,is,ae). Using the data provided in the vocab lists (see Useful Resources for the pdfs!), my program builds a string out of the root morpheme and its necessary endings for any given form (e.g. genitive singular: puella + ae = puellae), as well as a string for the description of the target grammatical form (e.g. first declension feminine genitive singular) and of any other possible non-target forms (e.g. dative singular, nominative plural, vocative plural). This allows the program to test you either from Latin to English (giving leeway for non-target forms and spelling mistakes), or from English to Latin. The majority of the inflected forms are correct, however, since Latin is a language, there are quite a few individual paradigms which my program hasn't yet accounted for, so I'll leave it you guys to test which forms aren't covered properly!
But why, might you ask, would I use Vocabulous when I could just use Quizlet & co? Well, dear friend, the answer's quite simple. Vocabulous is better. Does Quizlet test you on grammar? No. Does Quizlet check for typos? No. Does Quizlet accept if you didn't write all the answers? No. Does Quizlet accept you writing the correct answers but in the "wrong" order? No. Does Quizlet accept answers that weren't exactly what it was looking for but were still correct? No.
So there you have it. Vocabulous is great.
It should be noted though that the program is only in its beta version, because I've translated it from my original (and much less faulty) Python program into the more website-compatible JavaScript, and so naturally there are some issues that pop up, including crashes and incorrect stringing together of morphemes. This will hopefully eventually be sorted out though!
Anyways, I hope you enjoy this website! Vale, amice!
